What is Your Purpose in Life?

What is your purpose in life? Is finding your purpose a challenge to you? What if I can show you a way to find your purpose in life? If you have given up on any hope of living a happy, fulfilled life, read on.

Stop the Confusion

There is a self-help book on the market for just about anything you can imagine. You can find books on any topic; from sewing to interior decorating, from building model airplanes to working on your own vehicle.

These might be considered as hobbies, but when you start thinking in terms of self-improvement, business skills, leadership or goal-setting, there is no shortage of books either.

“But that still doesn’t tell me what my purpose is”, you say. “Why am I here on earth? What am I supposed to do with my life? I what is your purpose in lifedon’t even know what I’m passionate about anymore.”

These are all valid questions and statements. Many people today feel trapped in their typical 9-to-5 lifestyles. It is a matter of survival, living from paycheck to paycheck. And while some can’t even afford the ‘luxury of only working 9-to-5’ – as they just can’t make ends meet and have to work at two jobs, others don’t have any job or income at all.

No wonder that people don’t dream anymore. They have no idea what they are passionate about. They slave their lives away for the sake of survival. People feel worthless. Goal setting? How can you set goals if you don’t even know what you want to do?

All those books mean nothing if you don’t know where to start or what you want to do.

Don’t Over-Complicate Things

Don’t over-complicate things. I was reminded of this recently while I was doing some research. The headline ‘There’s No Such Thing As Business Leadership Principles’ caught my attention.

Brian Dodd (the writer of the article) was attending a meeting with several world-class leaders. The discussion was about ‘how to better build bridges between local churches and the business community.’ One of the topics of discussion was ‘what is the meaning of spiritual leadership’ and how business leaders (many of them who are outside of the church) would receive the term.

Some interesting answers (or views) were shared, but there is one main conclusion that Brian Dodd discusses in detail in his article. He says that the best book ever written on leadership is the Bible.

With the topic of my discussion today – what is your purpose in life – it is no different.  Where do you start? How can you plan anything if you don’t know what it is that you want to do?

Finding Your Purpose

Many people spend fortunes on self-improvement books, books on goal-setting, motivational speakers etc., yet they keep on searching without end. Meanwhile, the answer is within us, and with a little help – starting at the right place – we can find the answers we are searching for.

When I say ‘start with the Bible’, I don’t mean that now you have to end up becoming a preacher. There is no need to start Bible-bashing other people either. I love the way Dr. Bill Winston says it. He says “Christianity was never meant to be dictated; it was meant to be demonstrated”.

Once you find your true identity and you know your purpose in life, you will find joy and you will become successful in whatever it is you want to do. God needs people in all walks of life. The world needs doctors, artists, musicians, lawyers, engineers, writers, builders, architects…and who knows what else. You might be dreaming of taking care of elderly people and to just keep them company. You can schedule to spend some quality time with them, drive them to town for some shopping and just make them feel special.

I know of people who make a full time living from doing that. They take care of elderly people who don’t want to go to a retirement home because they still want to enjoy their independent lifestyle. Their safety and well-being are ensured by people who provide a valuable service (as described above) to these people. Who knows, if you fancy this idea, it might your calling.

What Is Your Purpose In Life and How Do You Find It?

If you think the Bible (or God) will tell you to become a singer or an engineer….no, that’s not going to happen.

The Bible is where you start, though. That is where you will get insight and understanding. It will tell you what God wants for you.  John 10:10 (NIV) says “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

If you have given up on your dreams, if you are stressed out and just in survival mode…just doing what you do because you have to; the thief (the devil) has stolen from you. I know, he has stolen from me for many years, but now I’m claiming it back.

Jesus wants us to have life, and have it to the full. Imagine living life to the full. What would you be doing if you can live life to the full? Where would you go? How would you spend your time? How would you feel? Who would you spend your time with?

If you think you don’t have any dreams, if you can’t even remember what you are passionate about; think back as far as your childhood. In your mind, re-visit those days when you were dreaming about being a fighter pilot or a nurse. When you recall those thoughts and dreams, how do you feel? Deep down you’ll find something that makes you feel…”yes, how I would love to do that every day.” Let’s call it your…’aha moment’.

Make Your Own Choices

“Great, I have these dreams and I can remember what I’ve been passionate about all along. But I still don’t know what God’s will for my life is”, you say.

God won’t ‘spoon-feed’ you. Neither will He force you into anything. God has given you the freedom of choice. He will give you guidance and lead you along the way, though. Where do you think your dreams and passion came from?

We always hear how unique we are as individuals. “Nobody has the same thumbprint as you. You are unique. You are special”, they say. That is true, but it doesn’t stop there. Why do some people have a passion for business, others have a passion for flying while yet another group are passionate about the medical profession?

Yes, we need many business people. But everybody doesn’t want to go into business for themselves. It takes a certain type of person with a specific type of personality and a unique way of thinking to be a good business person. Yet, artists have a different personality and way of thinking.

The Best Way To Success Is By Just Being You

So, think what you are passionate about. Start dreaming again and then just be you.

As far as God’s will is concerned; He makes that clear in the Bible. Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) says “ For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

It is not our good works that bring us salvation or that will get us into heaven. We do good works because we are saved and we love God. And those good works (which we are passionate about) have been prepared in advance for us to do. It is already there, on the inside of you.

Philippians 4:8 (NIV) says “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

How Do You Know That You are Making the Right Choices?

The Bible is not the only way for God to communicate with us. People didn’t always have a Bible to read the same way we do today. In the beginning, God communicated with Adam and Eve directly. Then He communicated with people through prophets and priests. In the days of Moses, the laws were given on tablets of stone. The written Word (inspired by the Holy Ghost) only came later.

Today we are blessed in the sense that we have the written Word available to us in book form, in audio and even online.

Yet, that is still not what we are limited too. Today God also communicates with us directly through His Holy Spirit. It was prophesied in Isaiah 30:20-22 (NIV) by saying; “20 Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. 21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” 22 Then you will desecrate your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, “Away with you!”

The Holy Spirit is with you 24 hours a day, 7 days week. 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV) says “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own…”. Also see 2 Corinthians 6:16. It is not to say that you will hear an audible voice speaking to you. God’s Holy Spirit communicates directly with your human spirit.

Listen To That Still, Small Voice Inside of You (Which is Not so Small After All)

what is your purpose in lifeHave you ever had the experience where you avoided doing something or took a different root for no apparent reason? And later you found out that it would have ended in disaster or there was an accident and you could have even been involved if you decided otherwise?

Or maybe you did something, but you cannot explain why. When talking about it, we often say “it was just as if something told me to…”

Have you ever thought of the possibility that ‘that something’ might have been the Holy Spirit?

Give It Everything You’ve Got

When making your decisions on what choices to make, pray about it. When you know you are in line with the will of God, you will sense a feeling of confidence and calmness.

Then give it everything you’ve got and stand in faith according to Mark 11:22-26. God does not want to hurt you; He has plans for you, plans to give you hope and a future which you can look forward to (Jeremiah 29:11).

Colossians 3:17 (NIV) says “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
