You’re about to start a new venture. You know what you need to do; but – do you have what it takes? What if you don’t make it? What are the people going to say? Will you be able to withstand all the remarks and the critics?
Stop right here. If you are being intimidated by these questions, it’s time to take stock of yourself and consider renewing your mind.
Your mindset is far more important than what many people would give credit for. And I’m not just talking about positive thinking. I’m talking about commitment. I’m talking about conviction and faith.
Do you believe in what you are doing?
Do you really know why you want to do it? What will be achieved by this venture? Who will benefit from it and how?
It’s not about a Lucky Break; it is About Renewing Your Mind
We often hear people talk about successful people and referring to the breakthrough that led to their success, or even when they had a “lucky break” or how they just were at the right place at the right time.
They (especially top business people) are also often used as examples to promote positive thinking.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against positive thinking, in fact, I’m all for it. But there is much more involved to achieve true, sustainable success. Just thinking nice positive thoughts won’t change your life.
The most successful people in the world are just as exposed to criticism and bad remarks as we are – if not even more. They surely didn’t overcome this by just thinking positive thoughts. You won't become successful just by thinking positive thoughts. Click To Tweet
It Takes More Than Just Positive Thinking; You Need to Believe What You Are Thinking
We need to take a look at how they handle it. How do they overcome it? I guarantee you; it goes way beyond just positive thinking. These people are so committed to their cause and dedicated to what they do, that these remarks cannot shake their faith. They are convinced about their own abilities, and they do not need approval from someone else to confirm that for them.
Positive thinking comes as a result after taking control of your mind and adopting it as a lifestyle. The Bible calls it ‘the renewing of the mind’ (Romans 12:2).
You have to take control of your mind first, and yes, it does involve your thinking. You must consciously decide to change the way you think, and you have to work at it.
If you’ve been a negative thinker all your life, you are not just going to make the decision, start thinking positive thoughts and your life magically changes.
Unfortunately, it is not all that simple. You have to form the habit of thinking positive, faith-filled thoughts. This is extremely important though, as thoughts have a far greater impact on our lives as what many people want to acknowledge.
Fact is; negative thoughts are toxic. Yet, you can change the process from thinking negative thoughts to thinking positive thoughts. The quality of your life is determined by your thought life, but in order to change the way you think, you should pay attention to what you believe.
Have Faith in What You Are Doing
“How can I have confidence in what I want to do? How can I know for sure that I will be successful? There are no guarantees”, you say.
Sure, the only guarantee we have is that our life here on earth as we know it will eventually come to an end.
But to give any meaning to life, you have to believe something or someone.
The Bible is a good place to start. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) says “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.
Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all this through him who gives me strength”.
Make the quality decision to make God’s Word final authority in your life. With God’s Word as the final authority in your life, you start meditating on scriptures such as these according to Joshua 1:8.
Read it out loud so that you can hear it. Think about it constantly. Eventually, your mind won’t have a choice….it will line up with the Word and you will start thinking positive thoughts….because that is what you believe.
And this is the point I want to make. You don’t start thinking positive thoughts and then suddenly believe it. You first change your thinking, and then develop your faith until you start thinking positive thoughts because of your faith. That is how you work towards the renewing of your mind.
Create Your Own Breakthrough
Now that you know how to take control of your mind and change your thinking, it is time to change your life. You don’t need people’s approval to be the best you that you can be. Listen to wise advice and constructive criticism and then take appropriate action.
Don’t waste your energy on what other people are doing and saying either. Let every person take responsibility for his/her own actions.
Your thought life not only contributes to your success or failure in life, it also has a very physical effect on your physical and emotional health.
Don’t get involved in arguments with negative people who make bad remarks. That is a waste of good energy. If you are in the will of God, keep on doing what you should be doing and leave the rest in His hands (Psalm 37:1-6).
Start dreaming big. Set your goals, but don’t make the mistake of only staying focused on the big goal.
Once you have set your ultimate goal that you want to achieve, create an action plan consisting of smaller goals which are easy to achieve. These smaller goals should all contribute to achieving the main goal.
Remain focused on each of these smaller goals as you work through them one by one. The joy is in the journey, not the destination. By the time you achieve your main goal, you will most likely find that you are already working towards another goal much bigger than your original goal. The joy is in the journey, not the destination.
